Today's Tomorrow, Today

Cohort rings poorly in the ear, fails to touch the heart. Friend, as complete as the word may be, leaves something out of what we have shared. Partners, yes but the word has been loaded, hasn’t it. I will be thinking about the right word for these people with whom I have shared three summers, a rebirth, and more than one puppet show. You can’t just get anyone to share a puppet show with you. Really.

Often I forget to wash my hair in the shower. I have spent my time in the shower thinking very hard about things: how to get Mike Teevee shrunk for our school production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, how to keep my electric toothbrush charged during my month in Spain, where to place Sophia’s bed so that she might sleep better. Often, I emerge from the shower with the fresh glow of epiphany and shouting to Cinzia the product of my time under the spout. Usually, my hair is still unwashed.

Today Ben has offered to help me set up a blog on the condition that I use it for my thoughts about life. (Thank you, Ben, who has heard more than his fair share.) And so I invite you into my shower and into my mind to wrestle with me over some of the joys, fears, and revelations that make life so. I hope that you, too, find the experience cathartic. And if it causes you to overlook some of the finer points of personal hygiene I will loan you a hat.
